United Nations says, “ Pakistan floods worse than 2004 Tsunami " Massive floods in Pakistan in July-August have created an unprecedented damage to all the peoples of Pakistan. UN estimates the total number of affected people to be 14 millions. The province of Sindh being at the lower riparian of the Indus River and having the worst poverty index in the region is in dire need of relief.

23rd Annual SANA Convention In Orlando, FL June 29 â€“ July 2

Sindhi Association of North America (SANA) is holding its 23rd annual convention in Orlando, Florida, USA from June 29 to July 2. A large number of community members from the US and Canada will attend the convention. A number of delegates from Sindh, other parts of Pakistan, Europe and other areas are also expected to participate in the convention.

It may be noted that a SANA convention is historically the most popular and a major event for Sindhi community in North America. The convention this year is being organized with the theme of â€œRivers For Life: Save Indus Riverâ€. Experts from Sindh and the US will speak on different aspects of water issue in Pakistan.

The Convention will also focus, among other things, on the present state of affairs in Pakistan, the continued denial of social, cultural, democratic and human rights to the people and the attacks on judiciary, media, minorities and women.

A number of human rights activists and political leaders have been invited to speak at the convention.

SANA has also invited the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Mr. Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to attend and speak at the convention on the independence of judiciary.

Special features of the convention this year include a lecture by renowned archaeologist and paleontologist Professor Dr Paolo Biagi on the prehistory Sindh based on his years of research and excavations in Rohri and other areas in Sindh.

Chancellor of Isra University, Professor Dr Ghulam Qadir Kazi will be one of the other main speakers at the convention.

The three-day convention would also have programs for youth and women as well as literary and cultural sessions, business workshop, medical seminar, a meeting on the status of education in Sindh, general body session and Executive and Advisory Council meeting.

Two nights of Sindhi folk and mystical music have also been arranged. The invited artists include versatile singers Sadiq Faqir, Deeba Sehar and Kajal Chandiramani.

An awards ceremony for talented students and other community members who have extraordinary achievements to their credit will also take place.

The 22nd Annual SANA Convention of Sindhi Association of North America (SANA) successfully took place from June 30 to July 3, 2006 in Toronto, Canada. The convention was at the Marriot hotel at airport Toronto, Canada.

The three-day convention was fully packed with a variety of sessions and activities bringing love and unity within more than 400 Sindhi individuals.

The organizers had done a marvelous job to ensure every individual's console and make sure the events go along smoothly. For instance, some local organizer’s never had a chance to attend any previous SANA Convention in their lives. However, they did a wonderful job under the conditions.

The local organizing committee consisted of Khair Mohammad Kolachi (chairperson), Maqsood Soomro (vice-chairperson), Syed Shahnawaz Shah, Ms. Farzana Daudpota, M. Afzal Memon, Aijaz Qureshi, Nazir Baloch, Ashfaq Memon, Syed Jawad Shah, Ismael Daudpota, Abdbul Rahim Khatri, Zulfiqar Khowaja, Unaizah Hussain, Awais Laghari, Abdul Razzaque Khushk, Adnan Qureshi, Abdul Rasheed Soomro, Shakeel Nizamani, Inamullah Yoosufani, Imran Sheikh, Mohammad Bux Tunio, Abdul Jabbar Lashari and Dr. Rahman Soomro.

They really did a wonderful job ensuring every one's comfort and offering an unforgettable hospitality. Indeed, this event is one of the most memorable SANA Annual Conventions that will be remembered by everyone who attended.

It will be injustice, If I miss the names who work very hard behind the scenes along with Convention Organizing Committee (COC) and they are: Zafar and Adi Zeb Agha, Dr. Ajaz Turk, Dr. Mazhar Lakho, Dr. Sattar Shaikh, Adi Surriya Panhwar, Aziz Narejo, Jamil Daudi, Taj Nizamani, Sarfraz Memon, Talat Talpur , Gulam Mohiuddin Morai, Mashhood Qazi, Saleem Langha, Khalid Channa and Khalid Memon.

Here, I will give credit and gratitude to all the members of who were organizers, especially Ashfaq Memon, who organized an amazing variety of different music teams and individuals to come and perform. The young dancers and the professional singers fulfilled the expectation of audiences for the first full Music night, which ended around 2:30 am.

In addition, some students received certificates as awards for excellent academic performance and achievements. Dr. Rehman Soomro organized this and Jamil Daudi presented the certificates.

The second music night was started by a comedian, Azhar Usman (from USA), who was followed by Gope Chander, Harish G. Damwani, Anil G. Damwani and Arti R. Gurnani. (came from USA). They are the proponents of the legendary Sindhi music from Singer Master Chander. The rest of the night was entertained by a local music team consisting of Tariq Bhai, Hashim Bhai and other four musicians. The audience enjoyed their performance a lot all night along and lots of people joined in by dancing traditionally. The wonderful music night ended at around 3:00 am in the morning.

Lot of people enjoyed and participates in both session of Youth and Women’s program. Guided and coordinated by Zafar Agha, Adi Zeb Agha, Ms. Farzana Daudpota , Ms. Unaizah Hussain, Abdul Rasheed Soomro, Farhia Riaz and Adi Surriya Panhwar.

In General body meeting, status, update, direction and future vision for SANA organization was given by President as well as by General Secretary of SANA, in the same venue, Ada Talat Talpur gave the financial status to audiences and urge members to come forward and help financially to non-profit community organization. Zafar Agha gave the presentation on SANA FAME fund status and the news related to student’s scholarships, which were recently selected by the FAME fund committee. Then Ms. Amber Laghari read total nine Amendments, which were then discussed, and finally passed all of them with slight addition in one amendment, which was also passed. The General Body also unanimously approved the following resolutions:

· Release Dr Safdar Sarki, other political workers
· Provinces be granted autonomy as promised in the 1940 resolution
· Sindhi be granted the status of a national language
· Solidarity with the slain and harassed journalists families
· Demolition of Sindhi villages and take-over of Historical Buildings
· Rightful share to Sindhis in employment opportunities
· Return to Democracy
· Balochistan operation/Removal of army from civilian areas
· Illegal Water projects

Many participants involved in “My Vision for SANA and my Role in it” session and spoke their views about past, present and future SANA’s roles. They offered their opinions and suggestions from their perspectives and it was well received by audiences on the very first day of SANA Convention after the General Body meeting. Speakers were Zafar Agha, Adi Zeb Agha, Ali Nawaz Memon, Dr. Tofiq Shah (from Sydney, Australia), Dr. Saghir Shaikh, Adi Pireh Ansari, Asim Kaghzi and Dr. Ajaz Turk.

Ada Waseem Baloch, president of Hidaya Foundation gave us the insight for Hidaya
Foundation as well as details on how they are operating. They are distributing the donations in different places in the world with needy people who could use more books, training, medicines, and other medical related assistance. A lot more information is on www.hidaya.org.

Besides the Medical Seminar, there were doctors at the tables to do blood screening, blood pressure tests and gave medical related suggestions. They also distributed gifts to those who were taking the free cholesterol screening. The results were given on the spots to people along with the preventive medical suggestions towards their tests screening. Organized by Dr. Valeed Shaikh, Dr. Sattar sheikh, Dr. Mazhar Lakho and many more.

In the Sindhi Adabi session, Ms. Fahimida Hussain (Chair, Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, Karachi University) presided the session in which Dr. Baldev Matlani (Head of Sindhi department, Mumbai University) and Hiro Thakur (Broadcaster, author, research scholar) were guests for this beautiful session. Their speeches were very informative and served as an eye opener for our young Sindhi generation. This definitely helps us be on the right direction to keep our Sindhi culture and heritage alive.

On the third day, which was Monday July 3, 2006, there was Niagara Falls Bus trip from hotel, bus was arranged for this trip and most of the USA guests were on this trip.

Here, I will urge every one of you who attended the 22nd Annual SANA Convention to please let us know what your thoughts, feelings and opinions are. You should share them with us with people who could not attend this convention.

Next, the 23rd Annual SANA Convention 2007 is going to be held in Orlando, Florida on the July 4th weekend celebration. We hope that you and your family and friends will enjoy the upcoming SANA Convention at the land of Disney World in 2007 year.

Sindh Day Celebrations in Sindh Louis (ST. LOUIS) March 11, 2006

It was a glorious Saturday afternoon in the city known as the gateway to the West, and it turned out to be the gateway towards a rejuvenation of ST. Louis SANA Chapter in the Midwest, and the resurgence of the once robust and vital Sindhi Medical Association of North America. The ever gracious Qalbani couple, Shireen and Mahmood Qalbani, had given ample opportunity to Sindhis of the Greater St Louis area in particular, and those of the Midwest in general, to gather at their residence, and they responded well.

From out of the area, came the bespectacled, quiet and thoughtful SANA president Aziz Narejo. Aijaz Turk and Valeed Sheikh came from Michigan and Minnesota respectively, and Fahima and Askar Qalbani from Sioux City. Mr. and Mrs. Saleem Ursani, were visiting here, and joined in to meet and greet old friends, along with their hosts the Dr and Mrs. Mithal Vakassi. From across the Mississippi from the Land of Lincoln, came Amanullah Pathan, Abdul Wahab Kazi, Rukhsana and Anwer Bhutto, Fozia and Shabbir Shaikh, Asma and Mazhar Lakho, and this scribe and his wife Nasreen. Missouri itself was strongly represented: Qalbanis et al* (the families of Roshan and Dewan, Zarina and Siraj, Neelam and Aslah), Ashok came with his spouse Dhuru, Adi Neeta came with the Sham Tekwani, and Nand and his brother came with their better halves. Adi Mehrunissa and Aijaz Memon his sister Adi Anees from Pakistan and Adi Sarla were with us too.

As usual all families brought their children with them and they had great time too. We walked into the glow of the Qalbani home, enjoying the warmth of their hospitality, and quickly settled down to the business of the day, the purpose being to bring out some concrete and feasible ideas to strengthen SANA.

Mahmood asked this scribe to pen down a report of this meeting, and I am doing so, entirely from memory (which gives me a trying time nowadays), thus all lapses are inadvertent and pardonable!

Mahmood convened the session with a formal tenor to the all-around informality, and requested Aziz to chair the session, who did so with great alacrity, underlying three aspects to be discussed here:
1) How to strengthen SANA, make it more vibrant and increase its membership;
2) Formation of Greater St. Louis Area SANA Chapter and
3) Propose some feasible project(s) from this moot to be taken as model project(s) by SANA in Sindh.

He briefly spoke on the importance of â€˜Sindh Dayâ€™ - the celebration of the famous student movement of 4th March 1967. He also briefed the gathering on SANA Sindh Convention.

Aijaz Turk first took the floor and espoused the need of projects in Sindh from the platform of SANA, which can be proudly owned by Sindhis abroad. He propounded the idea of adopting one of the district level high schools being envisaged by SZABIST, and said he and Valeed Shaikh plan to give $50,000 each as seed money for that. Dara Bhajan had his ideas. Dr. Ashok Kumar was concerned with the most important aspect of management and control of such projects. Dr. Anwer Bhutto, thought the proposal noble, but opined whether we could help modernize existing educational facilities in Sindh.

Askar Qalbani explained to us the ideas of macro and micro indulgences in problems in Sindh, and there attempted resolutions from us abroad, and thought it more feasible to interact with state-run schools. I for one leaned towards helping out the existing schools in the private sector.

Shabbir wanted us to think of an idea of opening one model institution, funded and operated by SANA itself, and exhorted us to look at this type of an idea already practiced by the Abbasis* in Kot Deji, ISRA University in Hyderabad, and more lately by Saleem Ursani, who has established and is running a school in Hyderabad. Kazi Abdul Wahab, Dewan Qalbani, who gave the example of such a school in Badin, and Aijaz Memon, agreed with Shabbir. It was therefore decided with unanimous consent to explore the idea for the establishment of a model educational institution in Sindh by SANA, by creating an Education Foundation under SANA, and present it to the SANA moot in July this year. Aijaz Turk was requested to compile such a proposal in the given time frame.

The question of increasing the membership of SANA was taken up next. Mazhar Lakho opined that out of some 5000 Sindhis here only a few are members of SANA. A healthy discussion ensued as to how to bring them into the folds of SANA. Askar Qalbanisâ€™ suggestion that all regular membership dues be waived created a healthy interest. Most of the members termed it a brilliant idea while some others raised some questions to its practicality. Some participants said that voting rights should be given only to the paying members.

A unanimous opinion emerged that the question should be addressed through an amendment in the bylaws and Aslah Qalbani volunteered to make a draft and present it to EC, the general body and to post it on Sanalist for further discussion.

To generate permanent funds it was proposed to make new life members. To maintain vibrancy of the association Askarâ€™s suggestion that the SANA president write to every Sindhi here welcoming him/her to SANA, and enclosing a card for a suggested donation of $2 to $25, was enthusiastically accepted. To provide the president names and addresses of Sindhis here everyone was encouraged and entrusted with the task of increasing/updating SANAâ€™s membership database.

The SANA president said that the Sindhis of the greater St Louis area have always been in the forefront of SANA activities, and suggested the formation of a Greater St Louis/ MO SANA chapter. It was unanimously agreed upon, and Aijaz Memon by consensus was nominated to be its first president, and Anwer Bhutto agreed to hold the first convention of this chapter at his residence in the near future.

By and large this gathering was very productive, and as far as SANA goes the following suggestions were agreed upon for further action:

1. Aijaz Turk will work on a concrete proposal for the establishment of a model educational institution in Sindh, by creating a Education Foundation under SANA, and present it to the SANA President, in a timely manner.

2. An amendment to incorporate changes in the regular membership dues will be presented by Aslah Qalbani, in a timely manner.

3. A Greater St Louis Chapter of SANA was established with Aijaz Memon as its first president and Anwer Bhutto as its convenor. Both were authorized to proceed with the process.

At this juncture, physicians who were founder members of Sindhi Medical Association of North America (SMANA), requested discussion on how to revive this August body. Everybody agreed, and it was unanimously decided to revive SMANA and Dr Mahmood Qalbani and Dr Shabbir Shaikh requested to co-chair this noble venture, and $20 each was collected as donations for this project.
At the end of this gathering a vote of thanks was exuberantly passed to thank Adi Shireen and Mahmood Qalbani for their great hospitality.

Glimpses of the First SANA Winter Convention in Sindh

SANA held its first Winter Convention in Karachi on December 24, 2005. The Convention was successful beyond anyone's expectations in every respect. Here are some of the glimpses of the Convention and other programs. We hope to post many more pictures as they become available along with a report from the EC Members. In the meantime, let us join Aziz Narejo and his EC to thank Dr. Javed Laghari,one of the founders of SANA and Chief Organizer; and his local organizing committee for a wonderful job. Hopefully SANA Winter Convention in Sindh will become a yearly tradition.

10 th. SANA ST.Louis Chapter invited him to a gathering of Prominent Life and some no-life members of SANA. Here he spoke on Current Affairs. The Meeting was arranged by Dr. Ashok Kumar at Dr. Narendar Soorya's House and was hosted by Mrs Sarlla Soorya. We will be publishing pictures from that meeting soon. He has been active in many small projects in Sindh including yearly eye-camps. He has sent the following plea to SANA on the occasion of the Annual Convention in Washington DC...Editor

ROADMAP FOR IMPROVING EDUCATION IN SINDHFOR SINDHIS WHO LOVE SINDH AND WANT TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

There are 44000 (36000 Primary and 8000 Higher) Government Schools andapproximately175000 appointed teachers. More than 50% of schools eitherexist on paper or function below par. Quality of some teachers issubstandard and some get paid without going to schools!However in some cases minor interventions by the volunteers produced vastimprovement in standards. In a small project in Naushehro Feroze, we foundpaying for one extra teacher was all that required. In one case supply ofschool chalks, blackboard and notebooks got the school going. In a differentproject, a hired bus collected small girls from different villages, tookthem to the school in Naushehro Town Girls' School and returned them totheir homes in the evening thus enabling these girl to continue with theireducation.LET US DO WHAT IS DIFFICULT BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE:1. Find out Government Schools in your village or town or in the vicinitywhich are facing problems. You will easily find such schools. 300 schoolsare closed or partly closed in Naushehro district alone.2. Adopt one School. Appoint a relative, a friend or any locally unemployedgraduate to visit the school and find out what could be done to restart orimprove it. Then take steps to address that problem along the line ofexamples given above. Also get help from the local rich people.3. If you travel to Pakistan, try to visit such schools and partake in theprocess of ongoing help.You can only change the fortunes of Sindh by educating Sindhi children. Weare in the UK and USA because of our education which Sindh gave us. It isour duty to payback. Let us not deny Sindh’s children their basic HumanRight of education.Do you think this makes sense? If yes, then please consider it.

SANA Community has many unpublicised social functions every month. This month has also been very busy. There was an important marriage ceremony of Dr. Agha Siraj's daughter, Dr.
Iram Agha with Dr. Jamil Agha. Guests had come from all over the USA and even UK. Last week on April 23, 2005 Drs. Ashok Kumar and Dr. Durrupadi invited everyone to their son's threading ceremony. A hall in Howard Johnson near Lambert International Airport was booked and catering was arranged by India Palace Restuarant closeby. Delicious food both vegetarian and non-vegetarian was served along with lot of Power Point presentations, videos, music and Ho Jamalo dancing on different dialects.

Dr. Ashok Kumar is a member on SANA's Advisory Committee. He had been
very popularPresident of Dow Medical College Sindhi Medicos Association before leaving for UK. In UK he did his FRCS in Orthopedics before coming to the USA. In USA he along with his wife Dr. Durupadi did residency in Rehabilitation Medicine. Currently he is Associate Professor at the Washington University School of Medicine, ST.Louis. He is also President of Missouri Medical Society. Despite his very busy schedule he has always found time to do something good for the SANA Community on individual as well as collective level. He was also the chief organizer of the last memorable convention of SANA in ST.Louis. In brief he belongs to that rare class of graceful individuals who speak less do more. Drs Ashok and Durupadi originally come from Lasbello and are fluent in Balochi as well.

Dr. Jamil Soomro a well known physician died of Cancer in his adopted country UK about
9 months ago. His Wife and daughter came to attend recently held marriage ceremony. Theystayed with Dr. Amanulllah Pathan's family in Belleville and were invited to dinner byDr. Sham Lal Tekwani where most of the senior SANA members were invited, includingthose who are hardly seen. Therefore our mole in ST.Louis was kind enough take some pictures.
